The 1st International Safety Symposium "How to Build Safety in the Fourth Industrial Revolution" was held on June 4th.

The General Incorporated Association, Institute for Global Safety Promotion (IGSAP) and Nikkei BP Research Institute held the International Safety Symposium "How to Build Safety in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution - Safety Experts from Around the World Discuss from a Management Perspective" on June 2017, 6. The symposium was held at the Bellesalle Kanda Event Hall in Kanda, Tokyo, and was attended by nearly 8 people, an unusual number for a symposium of this kind, highlighting the high level of interest in new safety topics.

The symposium began with an opening speech by Mr. Fumiichi Sato, Deputy Director-General of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's Manufacturing Industry Bureau. In a special speech, Mr. Toshiyuki Shiga, CEO of the Innovation Network Corporation of Japan and Vice Chairman of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd., spoke about the coming automobile society and the future of safety. Next, Mr. Masao Mukaidono, Chairman of IGSAP and Professor Emeritus of Meiji University, spoke about how to build safety amid major social change, and about the "Future Safety Initiative" was first released.

This symposium also featured speeches from well-known researchers from Germany and France who are leading the world in safety. Dietmar Reinert from Germany spoke on the theme of "The key to the success of Industry 4.0 from a safety perspective," while Didier Baptiste from France spoke on the theme of "Organizational change required by technological innovation: The effectiveness of accident prevention measures," sharing the latest safety information from Europe with the audience.

Afterwards, the IGSAP directors gave speeches one after another. Toshihiro Fujita emphasized the role of management and the importance of strategic initiatives. Norio Kodaira, Chief Engineer of the Equipment Business Division, FA Systems Business Headquarters, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, spoke about the safety of industrial robots in his capacity as chairman of the Systems Engineering Division of the Japan Robot Association. Isao Adachi, accompanied by Takashi Kawata, Executive Officer and General Manager of the Civil Engineering Technology Headquarters of Shimizu Corporation, both members of the IGSAP Safety Executive Committee, and Kazuhiro Shirai, Chief Maintenance Auditor of the Maintenance Audit Department at JAL Engineering, touched on new risks that have become apparent in Japanese society.

In the final panel discussion, under the guidance of Mr. Fujita, Mr. Mukodono, Mr. Reinert, Mr. Baptiste, Mr. Kodaira, Mr. Kawata, and Mr. Adachi took to the stage and exchanged opinions on future safety and the return on investment in safety by answering many questions from the audience. The discussion was conducted in unison with the audience, and the audience leaned forward to listen to the heated discussion unfolding on the stage.

Finally, Mr. Nobuyuki Yamaki, Chairman of the Central Association for the Prevention of Industrial Accidents, gave the closing remarks, bringing the day-long international symposium to a close.
